Empowering Youth through Mindfulness: A Transformative School Initiative in
Himachal Pradesh
A comprehensive programme for schools was conceptualized for Himachal Pradesh to address the challenges of drug abuse, mental health, nutrition, safe and appropriate use of mobile phones, violence, and HIV/AIDS. This initiative was launched by SOHAMINDIA in June 2025.
Five schools in Solan District were selected for the programme:
- Boys Sr. Sec. School, Solan
- Sr. Sec School Shamrod, Solan
- Kothi Devra Sr. Sec School, Solan
- Sr. Sec. School Guggaghat, Solan
- Sr. Sec. School Salogra, Solan
Students from classes 9-12 served as the target group, along with their teachers.
Session Overview
An insightful session on drug abuse awareness was conducted at these schools. Dr. Daman Ahuja, a distinguished expert in public health and community engagement, led the session with a powerful introduction to mindfulness, followed by discussions and interactive activities on substance misuse.
Mindfulness Activity
The session began with a guided mindfulness exercise, where students were asked to sit calmly with their eyes closed. Dr. Ahuja narrated a mental imagery exercise:
“Imagine you are standing at a road. Before crossing, you look left and right for oncoming vehicles. Just as we avoid crossing a road full of traffic, our mind also has a road full of thoughts. We must learn to pause, observe, and not engage with every passing thought. Choose to watch your thoughts without engaging with them.”
He played a musical tone to help students focus on observing their thoughts.
In the second step, he guided them to identify their strengths while watching their thoughts and also recognize their negative patterns. He encouraged them to reinforce their strengths and eliminate negativities from their minds. This activity helped the children center themselves and develop focus.
To inspire and connect with the students, Dr. Ahuja shared the example of Shubhanshu Shukla, who is serving as the mission pilot for Axiom Mission 4, a privately organized mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Shukla is the first ISRO astronaut to visit the ISS and the second Indian to travel to space. Dr. Ahuja emphasized that with focus, unity of thought, and determination, any child can achieve great things and could be the next Shubhanshu Shukla.

Discussion on Drug Abuse
After the mindfulness exercise, Dr. Ahuja transitioned to the core topic—drug abuse. By this time, students had developed focus and concentration, free from mental clutter.
The students were informed about the growing concern of substance misuse in Himachal Pradesh. The speaker explained why youth often turn to drugs, citing:
- A desire to feel relaxed
- Coping with stress or emotional pain
- Influence of compulsive use, especially among laborers and vulnerable groups
Interactive Activity: Identifying Stress Triggers
To keep the students engaged, an activity was conducted where each student shared what caused them stress. Some responses included:
- Use of medications
- Public speaking
- Family conflicts
- Crying and emotional distress
- Health issues
Dr. Daman Ahuja emphasized the importance of expressing such concerns without fear and encouraged students to reach out to school teachers or counsellors.

Role Model Exercise
Following this discussion, Dr. Ahuja introduced another exercise where students were asked to speak about their role models. He emphasized identifying one specific quality of their role model and had a volunteer write each quality on a chart. Students spoke about various role models including their mothers, fathers, brothers, grandparents, and some mentioned sports personalities like Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni—all positive characters.
The atmosphere in the room became very positive. As each student spoke about their role model, everyone listened attentively, and it inspired others in the group.
Connecting Stress Management to Role Models
Dr. Ahuja then made a powerful connection between their stress triggers and their role models. He pointed out that while their role models also faced similar stress issues, they still managed to care for them so well. He encouraged the students to imitate and imbibe the qualities of their role models as a way to handle their own challenges effectively.
Constructive Solutions to Avoid Drug Use
To conclude the session, Dr. Daman Ahuja guided the students on healthy alternatives to handle stress and avoid drug use:

Community-Based Efforts
When Dr. Ahuja asked students about effective means to raise awareness about drug abuse, the students themselves suggested organizing village meetings to spread awareness. They volunteered to conduct door-to-door visits to announce community meetings and help choose appropriate venues. These meetings would be addressed by resource persons.
Household Outreach: Several students reported that alcohol consumption is very common in their household surroundings. They requested that a team from the school, along with volunteers, should visit selected households to counsel elders and community members about the impact alcohol has on children.
Teamwork Over Individual Effort: Most students in the session expressed the view that one person cannot make a significant difference. They believed that with the support of a group of volunteers, people in villages could be more effectively persuaded to give up alcohol.
Engage Local Leadership: The majority of students felt that to make the awareness campaign effective, it was essential to involve Gram Panchayats and Pradhans in the drug abuse prevention campaign.

Student-Led Initiatives
The enthusiasm shown by students was remarkable. They not only identified problems in their communities but also proposed practical solutions. Their willingness to take active roles—from organizing meetings to conducting household visits—demonstrated their commitment to creating positive change in their communities.
Conclusion
The session effectively combined mindfulness, motivation, and education to build awareness among students about the dangers of substance use. Through real-life examples, open dialogue, and actionable solutions, the students were not only educated but also empowered to make positive choices. Most importantly, they emerged as potential change agents for their communities, ready to lead grassroots initiatives against drug abuse.
The program successfully transformed passive listeners into active participants, creating a ripple effect that promises to extend far beyond the classroom walls.
